Each August we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The apostles Peter, James and John, see the praying Jesus’ appearance shine forth with the glory of God. Then they see Moses and the prophet Elijah conversing with Him. Finally, they hear the voice of the Father saying, “This is my beloved Son; listen to Him.”
Recently, we experienced a heartbreaking series of mass shootings in California, Ohio and Texas. While the details and motivations behind these tragedies are still being investigated, the carnage in El Paso, which has now been officially identified as an act of domestic terrorism, is a clear continuation of a rising trend of violent right-wing extremism, and marks the deadliest attack against the Hispanic population in the modern history of the United States.
