BELMONT — With the support of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Belmont Abbey College hosted a lecture March 20 by Professor Jaroslav Folda of the University of North Carolina, a world-renowned authority on medieval art history, about “The Book of Kells: a Masterpiece of Irish Art.”
More than 50 people attended the lecture about the famed Book of Kells, which was written and illustrated in an Irish monastery about 1,200 years ago. Folda provided his audience with a tour of the magnificent images and designs created by the monastic scribes and artists who fashioned one of the greatest works of medieval art. A group of students from Belmont Abbey College will be traveling to Ireland in May as part of the St. Gregory the Great program in Christianity and Culture, and will have the opportunity to see the Book of Kells firsthand.
Belmont Abbey College will host another talk on Catholic culture in Ireland on Thursday, April 12, again with support from the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The lecture – entitled “An Irish Catholic Odyssey” by Vincentian Father James Murphy, director of Irish Studies at Boston College – will focus on Irish history from the Counter-Reformation to the 20th century.
The lecture will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Mezzanine of the Student Commons. All are welcome to attend. For details, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
