HUNTERSVILLE — Undaunted by temperatures in the teens, more than 100 people turned out at St. Mark Church Saturday night to see the Perpetual Hope Gospel Choir perform a variety of songs, accompanied by a keyboard, drums and a little humor.
With 13 singers decked in red and gray robes, the 39-year-old choir from Our Lady of Consolation Church in Charlotte appeared as part of a fundraiser to help repair its church and education building, damaged by water and resulting mold.
St. Mark parishioners swayed, clapped and sang along to songs – both somber and rousing – including “God is Great,” “Holy Ghost Power” and “Make us One.” Choir Director Erick Massey led the hour-long concert which came to a close when choir member Wayne McDonald announced “I have to go home and walk my dog,” but not before sincerely sharing how his congregation is forced to meet in a gym and aches to return to its church building.
In gratitude and support, St. Mark made a gift to Our Lady of Consolation’s capital campaign, which is a little over halfway to its $2 million goal.
